phenomlab Like yourself I've used many over the years, but surprisingly I've found myself using Code at the moment. It works well, has a lot of integration and does what I need. For any basic note keeping or simple stuff, I tend to use Notepad++

I used sublime for awhile. Recently I have been using Atom.

mikejones I've been switching between VS Code and Atom trying to determine which one I like the best. I have (or hate) to say that VS Code is winning the race.

It comes down to the language I'm coding in. I've been sticking with JetBrains for basically everything from Web to C development but I'm starting to move over to VS Code - one editor for everything.

I recently jailbroke my phone again and have been making some custom apps/extensions for it. XCode isn't really matched in terms of iOS development, with the help of a clever shell project, I have auto complete for private SDK methods.

What features of VS code do you both like?

mikejones I guess for me it's about familiarity given my previous years with Visual Studio. However, I'm primarily a PHP developer (mostly backend), but have to say the VS Code has come a long way since the days when I was using PSPad and then Eclipse IDE.

Admittedly, I never really used the full IDE components, but I'm warming to the idea 😁

I'll throw my vote in for Vscode. It's simple, fast, lightweight, and the extensibility is great (may I say it's the flarum of Ides? 😁). I also really like that it's open source, and I can follow development.

askvortsov Yes, I admit that VSCode is winning the race for me also. I like the flexibility, adaptability, and probably more important than all other points, it's Open Source - essentially a fork from the closed source Visual Studio. And, as a final point, it works cross platform and is Microsoft's attempt to mix with Linux. I personally see this as a major step forward and would encourage it's usage. It seems to be updated very frequently as well, which also has huge appeal.

Huh, I haven't really gotten that impression: isn't visual studio written mostly in c++? Whereas vscode is mostly typescript running on electron.

askvortsov True, but the "VS" part has it's origins in "Visual Studio". Obviously, you can't support MacOS and Linux in C++, so you'd need to change the engine (hence Electron). A good article around the similarities and genesis can be reviewed here

I have been using VS Code. I used to used Atom but switched to VS Code to follow along easier while learning Javascript(feels like I have a long ways to go to get decent with it.). I like VS Code and has a lot of extensions to help with coding as well. I have never tried phpstorm due to that it costs money.

Madchatthew Yep, I've moved completely to VSCode now. I still like ATOM, but feel more at home with the former.

Curious - has anyone heard of a Windows editor called PsPad ? I used this all the time around 6 years ago and at one time it was my primary editor !

phenomlab I haven't used that one. I used one called Dreamweaver, but it wasn't owned by Adobe at the time. It was free and I think I liked it back in the day. VS Code is better though.

Madchatthew I seriously thought that would be the last I ever heard of Dreamweaver. Certainly is a blast from the past.

phenomlab yeah, I remember using it when I was first starting to get into making web pages. I really liked it. At least back then I did, not sure if it is any good now days.
