askvortsov True, but the "VS" part has it's origins in "Visual Studio". Obviously, you can't support MacOS and Linux in C++, so you'd need to change the engine (hence Electron). A good article around the similarities and genesis can be reviewed here
Madchatthew Yep, I've moved completely to VSCode now. I still like ATOM, but feel more at home with the former.
Curious - has anyone heard of a Windows editor called PsPad ? I used this all the time around 6 years ago and at one time it was my primary editor !
phenomlab I don't remember hearing or using that one.
Madchatthew Have a look at this http://www.pspad.com/en/
phenomlab I haven't used that one. I used one called Dreamweaver, but it wasn't owned by Adobe at the time. It was free and I think I liked it back in the day. VS Code is better though.
Madchatthew I used one called Dreamweaver,
That's going back a bit.... you're revealing your age there !
phenomlab I know right! I thought of that as I was typing it, lol.
Madchatthew I seriously thought that would be the last I ever heard of Dreamweaver. Certainly is a blast from the past.
phenomlab yeah, I remember using it when I was first starting to get into making web pages. I really liked it. At least back then I did, not sure if it is any good now days.
Madchatthew I doubt it has much of a place these days given that the more popular editors are in fact web driven - think WordPress themes etc. PHPStorm seems to reign supreme these days, but it's not free of course.
phenomlab yeah I wouldn't mind trying PHPStorm. I have heard a and read a lot of good things about it. Just don't want to dish out the money to give it a spin.
Madchatthew Same here. It's not cheap.
I haven't seen anyone mention Brackets, which I use a lot.
It's clean, fast, and open source, but sadly Adobe are killing it in September, so unless someone forks it, I guess I'll be moving on.
JohnP Wow, yes ! I can't believe I didn't include that one 😲
JohnP I have never tried brackets but I have heard a lot of people talking about it.
Madchatthew I think the thing that potentially puts me off is the fact that being owned by Adobe, it could suddenly land up as commercial. The same thing happened to MySQL which is how the MariaDB fork came about thanks to Oracle
phenomlab yeah that is the reason why I don't use it because Adobe owns it. That is why I also use mariadb. I want to learn to use Postgres and get even more familiar with mongodb as well. I wish flarum could use Postgres.
Madchatthew Yes, Postgres is becoming more popular - particularly with Oracle's extremely greedy model of charging outrageous licensing and support fees for their products, whilst simultaneously limiting the features available in standard edition, and moving them to enterprise.
